Riverside County Planning Director Robert Johnson feels the county must take a more
holistic view of developments in unincorporated areas.
Traditionally, the county has checked to make sure that a developers proposal follows all the rules
for setbacks, landscaping, walls and all the other detailed requirements of county regulations. But,
Johnson wants the developers, and his staff, to pay more attention to how their development fits into
the community as a whole.
Hes directed staff members to develop plans for entire areas of the county, consulting with local
residents and business owners. He wants to make sure these plans capture some of the history and feel
of individual communities. Then, developments will be checked to see how they fit into those plans,
and whether sufficient room is being left for community facilities, schools, parks and complementary
developments.
Johnson outlined his vision in front of over 80 people in the Chancellors Conference Room at University Village.
